A Commitment to Health and Community!

Dear friends,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our August newsletter. In this month's edition, we are delighted to share with you some exciting news about our commitment to health, community, and the environment in the Choluteca region. Throughout this newsletter, you will learn about our latest initiatives and how we are working together to make a positive difference in the lives of people and our surroundings. Without further ado, let's get started!

A Commitment to Health: Our Contribution to the Health Region of Choluteca

We have made a significant donation to the Departmental Health Region of Choluteca. The donation consisted of a variety of gynecological supplies aimed at improving the quality of healthcare in the region. The donation included speculums of different sizes, which are essential for conducting gynecological examinations efficiently and safely. In addition, several sphygmomanometers were provided, vital instruments for monitoring patients' blood pressure, a crucial measure for monitoring various health conditions. Furthermore, we contributed fixatives for cytologies, useful for conducting tests for the early detection of cervical cancer, one of the most common types of cancer in women in Honduras.

Uniting Creativity and Entrepreneurship

At FUNDESUR, we celebrate the success of the Piñata Workshop in La Bonanza, Namasigüe, where the community has transformed simple materials into vibrant piñatas full of joy. This workshop has led to the creation of a micro-enterprise composed of 13 brave and talented women who have embraced the entrepreneurial and resilient spirit. More than a source of craft skills, this project has strengthened community bonds and is significantly improving the quality of life for these families, providing new economic income and sowing seeds of hope in the community.

Joining the Environmental Cause: Our Participation in the RAEE Collection

We are proud to announce our active participation in the RAEE Collection, organized by the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment. It is imperative to understand the importance of properly managing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment to protect our environment and ensure a sustainable future. We appreciate everyone who joined and contributed to this collection. Every small effort counts, and together, we can make a significant difference.

We Delivered 220 Eco-stoves to Communities in Namasigüe!

Recently, we brought joy and well-being to 5 communities in Namasigüe: San Bernardo, Guamerú, Costa Azul, La Cuchilla, and 20 de Mayo, with the delivery of 220 new eco-stoves. Thanks to the collaboration with our partner Proyecto Mirador, we have now delivered a total of 446 eco-stoves this year. With each eco-stove, we are reducing the toxic smoke from traditional stoves, combating respiratory diseases, and visual problems that affect our communities.

Bringing Light and Hope to the Community of Isla Boca del Río Viejo!

We join efforts with the Municipal Government of Marcovia on a special mission: bringing light and hope to the 120 families of the community of Isla Boca del Río Viejo. With a contribution of L 130,000, we facilitated the purchase of 3 transformers, a crucial step for the electrification of the island. Rural electrification is more than just light; it is development, progress, and an improved quality of life. By illuminating our communities, we not only reduce poverty but also enhance commercial productivity and create employment opportunities, even after sunset.

Mangrove Reforestation Initiative in Marcovia and Namasigüe

We are initiating mangrove planting in the areas of Guapinol, Cedeño, and Boca del Río Viejo in Marcovia, and San Bernardo in Namasigüe. Currently, we are in the nursery review phase, with the valuable participation of 6 groups of fishermen committed to the preservation of our ecosystem. By the end of September, we will enter the exciting planting stage. We estimate planting approximately 51,000 propagules, marking a milestone in the restoration and protection of our mangroves. This project not only aims at environmental conservation but also at strengthening our fishing communities and the sustainable development of the region.

Contributing to Health through Medication Distribution

Honduras has been grappling with a concerning shortage of medications that has affected the population for several years, persisting into the current year. This situation has jeopardized the health and well-being of thousands of Hondurans, who have faced difficulties in accessing essential treatments due to various factors. In challenging times, a small step can make a big difference. We have delivered our third quarterly batch of medications, valued at L 296,500. These crucial supplies have been distributed to the 10 health centers in Choluteca and Valle, where our medical presence is constant. We are aware of the challenges Honduras faces in accessing medications, and while it is a modest step, we are committed to making a change.

Advancing Sanitation in Los Prados 1 and 2

According to statistics, 31.4% of rural households in Honduras lack access to sanitation. This equates to 1.1 million people living without access to basic sanitation services, such as toilets, latrines, or septic tanks. In addition, water and soil contamination can lead to the transmission of diarrheal diseases, such as cholera and typhoid fever. These diseases can cause severe health problems, including dehydration, malnutrition, and even death.

That's why, with an investment of over L 1,000,000, we have delivered 20 sanitary modules in Los Prados 1 and 20 in Los Prados 2 of Namasigüe, benefiting more than 200 people in these communities. Each module includes a sanitary unit, bathing area, sink with a 250-gallon capacity, and a 3-cubic-meter septic tank.

In summary, this month has witnessed our steadfast commitment to health, community, and the environment in the Choluteca region. From medical donations to community entrepreneurship projects and environmental efforts, we have worked tirelessly to make a positive difference in people's lives and the sustainable future of our region.

We appreciate all of you for being part of this exciting journey with us. Together, we are building a brighter and healthier future for our communities. Let's continue working together to achieve meaningful and sustainable change in our beloved Choluteca region.

Thank you for your support and ongoing commitment!

Sincerely,

The FundeSur Team
