"Welcome to Our Newsletter! In this edition, we present a series of projects and activities that reflect our commitment to the community and the well-being of those in need. From the construction of eco stoves to comprehensive medical care, as well as education and support for growing communities, every page of this newsletter is a testament to how, together, with determination and solidarity, we are building a brighter and healthier future for all.
Eco Stoves for a Healthy Home
Traditional stoves, commonly used for daily cooking, often lack proper construction and chimneys, leading to the generation of large amounts of smoke that spread inside the home. This can have harmful effects on vital organs such as the eyes and lungs and result in respiratory diseases. That's why, in partnership with Project Mirador, we have begun the construction of an initial batch of 150 eco stoves that will be distributed in different areas of the Municipality of Choluteca, including El Palenque, El Fantasioso, El Tulito, El Bosque, Santa Lucía, Colonias Unidas, and Barrio Sampile. Eco stoves have become one of our most valuable tools in reducing respiratory illnesses and decreasing firewood consumption, thus relieving pressure on natural forests."
Caring for Future Mothers
Providing care to expectant mothers is crucial to ensure a healthy pregnancy and uncomplicated childbirth. That's why yesterday, we held our Pregnant Women's Clubs session at healthcare centers in the communities of Agua Fría, Nacaome; San Bernardo, Namasigüe; and El Palenque, Choluteca. We evaluated a total of 42 patients who received comprehensive care from our medical team. In addition to medical consultations and nutritional assessments, we provided educational talks on food handling hygiene and addressed the importance of tuberculosis prevention. We focused on the physical and emotional well-being of expectant mothers. Each patient received their respective prenatal care and had the opportunity to share their concerns and questions with our professionals. We are proud to assist these women in having a healthy pregnancy and look forward to continuing to support them on their journey to motherhood.
Presenting Awards to the Winner of the Tire Collection Contest
In collaboration with Cementos Argos and the Herco Foundation, we have presented hardware materials valued at L 40,000 to C.E.B. Ramón de Jesús Zelaya, which will be used to reinforce the perimeter wall of the educational center. They won this prize by achieving first place in the contest for collecting used tires, called 'Tirethon 2023.' In just one month, they collected 3,130 tires. We congratulate and once again thank each institution, teachers, parents, and students who joined in collecting this hazardous waste, which is now being responsibly co-processed.
This activity, beyond being just a competition, is an educational way to teach students from all participating institutions about the importance of recycling used tires and to raise awareness that we often overlook the large number of used tires that we have, which not only affect the environment but also our health.
Building a School in La Bonanza, Namasigüe
We are very proud to share that we began the construction of the school in La Bonanza on March 15th, and we have been working diligently to make this long-awaited dream of the community come true. Previously, students from this community had to travel long distances to another community on dangerous roads to attend classes. Tragically, a terrible accident resulting from these long journeys led parents to ensure their children could receive education within their own community. However, without proper infrastructure, the children received classes in churches that lent their facilities or in old warehouses. But thanks to the support of FUNDESUR and the Municipal Government of Namasigüe, the children will be able to receive a quality education in a safe and comfortable space.
It is heartwarming to see how the community has come together to support the construction of the school. Parents and community leaders, upon seeing FUNDESUR's support, have actively contributed to the construction. Everyone has played a part in making this project a reality. Every day, we are getting closer to achieving our goal, and we cannot wait to see the smiles on the children's faces when they enter their new school for the first time. We are confident that this new educational infrastructure will have a significant impact on the community and improve the quality of life for all residents of La Bonanza.
Medical Outreach in La Cuchilla: Vaccinations and Deworming
In an effort to assist the community of La Cuchilla in their battle against COVID-19, our team of doctors organized an exciting vaccination and deworming outreach program. Throughout the day, we attended to hundreds of people and provided essential medical care to help keep the community safe. The primary goal of the outreach was to administer the second dose of pediatric COVID vaccines to children who had been registered the previous month and identified as recipients of the first dose. Additionally, we also dewormed the general population to prevent future health complications. It was challenging but rewarding work that showcased our medical team's commitment to the health and well-being of the community.
